Sel-Plex™

Sel-Plex^™, from Alltech, provides selenium in the form found in nature. Sel-Plex^™ is the first organic selenium to be authorised for use in the EU and the only one to have been reviewed by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Recently Sel-Plex^™ received FDA clearance for use in equine supplements, having already received clearance for use in equine complete feeds in 2004. Sel-Plex^™ offers selenium in its natural form. It contains the same range of selenocompounds present in plants - the forms animals are best able to absorb, store and utilise. Horses need selenium to maintain disease defence and reproductive function, support exercise tolerance and for overall health. We add selenium to equine feeds and supplements because their components typically provide inadequate levels.

Why do horses have trouble maintaining optimum selenium status?

Horses have traditionally been fed inorganic selenium and are unable to use this form efficiently because: Inorganic selenium cannot be effectively stored, leaving the animal without adequate tissue reserves. Mares cannot thus effectively pass along selenium to developing foals for building better selenium status and disease defenses. The industry can no longer rely on inorganic selenium supplementation, such as sodium.

Trace mineral nutrition is no longer a matter of adding only enough to prevent deficiency symptoms like white muscle disease. Modern genetics and performance expectations demand more. Forming tissue reserves of selenium is critical because nutrient demands change with circumstances - the greater the disease challenge, the faster trace minerals are used. The dietary level of a healthy animal may therefore be inadequate during times of stress. For horses, our goal is to supply selenium in the form closest to nature to ensure absorption, retention and utilisation of selenium throughout the animal's demanding life cycle.
