Gain Feeds Mill

Glanbia has a long and distinguished history in the animal feed business. Glanbia is the result of a merger between Waterford Co-op and Avonmore Co-op and it is looking back at the history of Waterford Co-op that we start the Gain® Feeds story.

In the early 1960's, Waterford Co-op begun manufacturing compound feeds in Dungarvan Mill. At this time its main focus was on producing Ruminant, Pig and Poultry feeds. From the beginning, the feed was a success and sales grew to meet the demand. By the 1970's, there were additional Mills in Castlelyons, Glenmore and Rathdrum. These mills were functioning at full capacity and yet the demand continued to grow. It was in the late 1970's that an opportunity was seen to develop a state of the art Mill to manufacture compound feed for Waterford Co-op and a small town in Co. Wexford was chosen as the location.

In 1980, Clonroche Mill was commissioned and to coincide with this, the Gain® Feeds brand was established. With the increased efficiency and capacity of Clonroche Mill, the Glenmore and Rathdrum Mills closed in the early 1980s.

In 1982, Derry Casey, the Agri Sales Manager of Waterford Co-op and Chris Miller, Gain® Feeds nutritionist saw an opportunity in the horse feed sector and formulated new horse feed rations. These proved to be a winning formula and in 1983 Gain® Horse Feeds was established. Clonroche Mill achieved the Q mark in 1983 and further horse feed rations were introduced under the Gain® Horse Feeds brand. Liam Cashman of Rathbarry Stud was very influential in the establishment of Gain® Horse Feeds into the stud sector and Jim Bolger had a similar influence towards achieving the high standards of racing feeds, Gain® Horse Feeds manufactures today.

In 1993, Gain® Pet Foods was established followed by Gain® Greyhound Foods in 1995. These products continued to grow and are now a very successful brands in the dog food pet and greyhound sectors.

In 1995, Gain® UK was established selling Gain® Horse Feeds and Dog Foods to a whole new market. Hywel Davies a former Grand National winning jockey set up Gain® UK and continues to head up Gain® UK.

In the mid 1990's Gain® Horse Feeds found a new market in Sweden where the Gain® horse feeds products proved very beneficial for the trotters in that area. Mike Casey, an Irishman based in Sweden, distributed Gain® Horse and Dog feeds in Sweden and is a key reason for Gain's® continued success in that market today.

In the early 2000's UFAS approval was achieved by both Clonroche and Portlaoise Mills. This was in addition to ISO 9000 that was achieved a number of years earlier. All these quality standards are audited annually and help ensure, Gain® Feeds remains the high quality feed customers have trusted for many years.

In 2008, Gain® Horse Feeds was selected as the Irish Feed Partner for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2010 in Kentucky. This prestigious partnership ensures that Gain® Horses Feeds continues it's focus on nutrition, quality and performance.
